Build your Custom Instructions
Answer a few quick questions about your work and how you like to communicate. You'll get a short set of instructions, called Custom Instructions, to save in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot. We'll show you where they go.

Takes about 3-5 minutes. Free, no sign-up.We don't save your answers or your results. To write your instructions, your answers are sent to Anthropic's Claude AI, which by default doesn't use them to train its models. Leave out client names or anything confidential.
Copy the text above, then paste it into your AI tool's personal settings. Where your tool and account have a place for it, it'll shape your new chats from then on, so you only do it once. What's available differs by tool and by personal or work account, so check yours below. Start a new chat afterwards to see the difference.
Pick your tool below. Menus change often, so if a label looks slightly different, look in Settings for "Personalization" or "Instructions".
Available on every plan, including free and work or school accounts. Free and Go accounts can save up to 1,500 characters. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts can save up to 5,000. Your text is written to fit, but if it won't all go in, trim a sentence or two. Temporary chats ignore it unless you choose otherwise when you start one.
It applies to all your chats. Anthropic doesn't publish the phone-app steps, so the website or desktop app is the easiest place to set it up. On a work account (Team or Enterprise), your organisation can add its own instructions too. Where the two clash, your organisation's win.
This needs a personal Google account. Google says it isn't available on work, school or supervised accounts in the Gemini app. Some of these settings also depend on your plan, age and country, so you may not see it yet. If not, use the paste-into-a-chat option below.
Using Gemini inside Gmail or Docs on a work or school account? That has its own setting: Ask Gemini → Menu → Settings → Personalization → Add. It doesn't share instructions with the Gemini app.
Work account (signed in to Microsoft 365 with your work email):
Microsoft lists this as a preview, so not every organisation has it yet, and your IT team can switch it off. If it's greyed out, that's usually why.
Personal account (the free Copilot app): there's no instructions box at the moment. Copilot only has Memory, which picks things up as you chat. Use the paste-into-a-chat option below instead.
Paste the whole text as your first message in a new chat, then ask your question underneath.
This only lasts for that one chat. The AI won't carry it into the next one, so keep the text somewhere handy (a note on your phone works) and paste it in whenever you start fresh. Some tools also let you save instructions inside a project or workspace, such as Projects in ChatGPT and Claude, Gems in Gemini or Notebooks in Copilot. Those stick for every chat in that space.
Treat this as a first draft. Use it for a week, notice what still feels off, and edit the text in your settings. You can also come back here and start again.
